Depression in Young People - Short Course
Depression in Young People is a short course, offered via distance education, that aims to provide clinicians and educators with an accessible and relevant training tool that provides information about depression, its prevention, assessment and treatment.
Teaching Materials
The teaching materials consist of three DVDs that focus on prevention, assessment and treatment of depressive disorders.
In addition, the video material is complemented by a reading pack containing lecture notes and reference material for the three components.
Course Content
Preventative approaches to depression - presented by Dr Nick Allen and Roslyn Webb.
- Young people speak about depression from personal experience
- Basic concepts of Major Depressive Disorder and Dysthymia in young people in a biopsychosocial framework are introduced
- Models for depression and preventative strategies are discussed
Assessment of depressive disorders - presented by Roslyn Webb.
- Introduction to assessment of depression and diagnostic formulation, with an emphasis on risk assessment in young people
- Public opinion on identifying depression in young people
Treatment of depressive disorders - presented by Dr Elizabeth Cosgrove and Dr Andrew Court.
- Research findings and current opinions on the use of biological and psychological interventions for depression in young people
- A psychiatrist talks about the use of anti-depressant medication in young people
- Public opinion on accessing professional help for young people with depression
- An example of the use of cognitive behavioural therapy intervention with young people experiencing depression
- The perspective of a family on their dealings with depression as well as a young person’s personal statements about living with depression
