Youth Mental Health First Aid
This is a two day workshop!
Day Two Friday 10 September 2010 9:00 – 16:30. Venue, RCH Tranvancore Campus.
Youth mental health first aid is designed to train adults to assist young people in mental health crisis situations or in the early stage of problems with mental health. This course will provide an overview of common mental health problems in young people (including depression, anxiety disorder, psychosis, substance use disorders and eating disorders), and how to recognize and effectively respond to these. This course will also address the issue of supporting young people in accessing professional help and what sort of assistance can be the most effective. Additionally, participants will learn how to comprehensively assist a young person in a range of ‘mental health crisis’ situations, including suicidal thoughts and behaviour, self-harm, panic attack or acute stress reaction, and acute psychotic behaviour.
Please note: This is an education course and not a therapy program or support group and is suitable for all people working with adolescents and young adults. On completion of the full 2 days, participants will receive a nationally recognized certificate. The course is facilitated by Judy Ring and Maria Ruberto from the Travancore School, Royal Children’s Hospital.
